Since both data (your notes) and program code (the stack's scripts) reside in the same document when using HyperCard, there is no easy way to upgrade to a new version of HyperNotebook. It is possible, however, and here's how to do it:
1. Open the new version of HyperNotebook in HyperCard. Make sure your HyperCard user level is set to "5".
2. Pull down the "Objects" menu and select "Stack Info". Click on "Script" in the dialog box for Stack Info.
3. Type "Command-A" to select all of the text in the script. Type "Command-C" (or use the menu for "Copy") to copy the script to the clipboard. Paste the script into your Scrapbook, if you have one. If not, don't worry; it's still in the Clipboard.
4. Close the new version of HyperNotebook, and open your old version of HyperNotebook. Now repeat the above 3 steps, but this time after you select all of the text in the Stack Script, don't copy it to the clipboard. Instead, paste the script you already have in the Clipboard (or in the Scrapbook) into the old version's stack script. In essence, you have now replaced most of the program code that makes HyperNotebook work, along with the new enhancements.
5. You're not done yet, though. Open the new version again. This time you are going to go to the new version of Reference Stack. Pull down the Reference menu and select "Set Preferences".
6. In the Preferences card you will notice a button with a box around it, and words to the effect that it is special and not to disturb it. Pull down the Tools menu and select the Button tool (looks like a button, middle of top row). Hold down the Option and Command buttons and click on the precious button in the box.
7. The button's script should be visible now. Select the script text from "on mouse up" down to the end and copy it to the clipboard. (Command-A and Command-C). Close the script edit window, and close HyperNotebook.
8. In order to upgrade your old version of HyperNotebook, you will have to open the script of every single button on both HyperNotebook and Reference Stack and replace their scripts (from "on mouse up" down to the end) with the one you've copied from the new version (which is now in the clipboard). This includes the button on the Preferences card in Reference Stack, as well as the hidden button on the opening title card in HyperNotebook (The 'splash' card that you first see). When you select the Button tool, and then hold down the Command and Option keys, you will see the hidden button's outline next to the box that says "Table of Contents". Click on the outline to see/replace that button's script.
I give you my apologies for the difficulty involved in the upgrading process. The PICT/QuickTime buttons in v. 1.0b1 are now as stable as they need to be, and I don't expect to upgrade them any time soon. This is probably the last time you'll ever have to perform such tedious surgery on HyperNotebook! Future upgrades will likely involve steps 1-4, since much of the stack's code exists in the Stack Script. I would have put it all in one script if it had been possible, but it wasn't.
